Historic Skills, Current Environmental Solutions:
A Personal Story of Local Sustainability OUR PROGRAM
Historic Skills, Current Environmental Solutions:
A Personal Story of Local Sustainability is designed
to excite young people about the earth on which they
live, by exposing them to concrete and practical ways
in which they can use local resources and practice
sustainability.
Students Will:
- Connect with the basic elements of life: shelter, water, fire,
and food.
- See many examples of hand-crafted items that are used in everyday
life.
- Be exposed to ideas like Voluntary Simplicity and Ecological
Responsibility.
- Experience wonder for the earth through witnessing everyday
miracles like the creation of a basket from a tree.
- Consider the advantages and disadvantages of traditional skills
and modern technologies.
- Feel excited and empowered by their ability to affect the earth
through individual choice.

SHELTER
We examine three types of traditional hand made homes, the Sammi
dwelling called Gamme, the log cabin, and the wall tent. We
look at efficiency, local materials, monetary vs. ecological
costs, and the crossing of old and new technologies. |
 |
WATER
We consider the importance of having clean water in life and
discuss natural springs, rain water collection, and water-saving
technologies such as composting toilets. |
 |
FIRE
Beginning at the beginning, we marvel at the creation of a fire
just through friction. Then we share about our use of wood heat
and the old- fashioned outdoor kitchen. Finally, we segue into
ideas for renewable energy, solar power, and solar cookers. |
 |
FOOD
We take a look at local food production. What can we grow in
New England? How do we eat all year long from a three month
growing season? Why eat local foods? We talk about organic gardening,
permaculture, wild edible plants, and food storage techniques. |
