Life on the Trail (February and March)

With skis on our feet we leave behind the long lists of expedition planning and greet the winter trail. 300 miles of unbroken snow stretch out before us.Who knows where we will sleep, but fir boughs will make a soft bed, and dry wood a warm tent. The mountains become our home.

“My feet are tired, my legs are sore and my heart is happy.”
–Saul Blocher, 18

We study the tracks of our new family; fisher, muskrat, rabbit and deer.

We fly down steep hills on winding trails. I make three good turns and one terrific crash!

We read the ice and learn how to find the door of a beaver’s lodge. We take one life and appreciate the incredible gift of meat and fur.

Vermont Semester Program “Our life is very
comfortable, and it’s
exciting to know
that we are capable
of living this way.
And what a beautiful
life!”
–Emily Turner, 15

“There is one main difference between skiing and flying: in skiing your wings are attached to your feet”
– Semester student
speaking on Vermont Public Radio
