Life on the Trail (February and March)
With skis on our feet we leave behind the long lists
of expedition planning and greet the winter trail.
300 miles of unbroken snow stretch out before
us.Who knows where we will sleep, but fir
boughs will make a soft bed, and dry wood a warm tent.
The mountains become our home.
We study the tracks of our new family; fisher,
muskrat, rabbit and deer.
We fly down steep hills on winding trails. I make three good turns
and one terrific crash!
We read the ice and learn how to find the door of a beaver’s lodge.
We take one life and appreciate the incredible gift of meat and
fur.
