CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
for the NEW HAMPSHIRE-VERMONT SEMESTER


(1 credit equals a minimum of 80 hours of instruction)

Kroka Expeditions strives to meet each student at his/her level of ability and support him/her in furthering growth in each subject. Kroka teachers attempt to discover and develop capacities in each individual student while strengthening a healthy development of the will, a feeling for all living beings and confidence to meet a complex world with understanding.

 

ENGLISH, 1 credit
Objectives: Read literature and explore poetry from New England authors, write daily journal entries, create a “Semester book”,
Methods: Writing, including two essays, reading, journaling, and discussions.

NATURAL HISTORY, 1 credit
Objectives: Study topics of Environmental Science including Winter Ecology, Botany, Meteorology and Geology
Methods: Daily observations and reflections, lectures, reading of and reflecting on scientific writings, in depth study of chosen plants and animals.

SOCIAL STUDIES, 1 credit
Objectives: study local geography and history, meet local elders and learn about their lives.
Methods: Live and travel in a small community of students and teachers for several months, share attitudes and feelings in oneself on a daily basis with the group, participate in a communications workshop, meet people along the way and listen to stories of elders.

CRAFTS, 1 credit
Objective: Create some of one’s own gear and equipment; learn the use of knife and axe, sewing, knitting and working with wood.
Method: Create practical crafts such as knife, mukluks, mitten shells, gaiters, hat, paddle and canoe, pack basket, spoon and bowl.

FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS, 1 credit
Objectives: Create a beautiful “Semester Book”, sing in rounds and in harmonies, develop theatrical presentations for the public.  
Methods: Instruction in the elements of visual arts, singing folk and traditional songs and drama games and theatrical performances.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION, 2 credits
Objectives: Deliver a fitness program; ski and paddle the length of Vermont.
Methods: Outdoor living skills, running, stretching, skiing and paddling.

LIFE EDUCATION, 2 credits
Objectives: Live a simple and healthy lifestyle throughout the semester.
Methods: Study general issues of Health and Wellness, learn about local and seasonal foods, offer nutrition classes and learn about food preparation, including fermentation and dehydration; create one’s own clothing and participate in traditional building projects, such as a Cree lodge; give individuals responsibility for the major parts of the community tasks.

COMMUNITY SERVICE, 1 credit
Objectives: Support neighbors, help people we meet along the way, service projects at our layover hosts.
Methods: Make connections to people who need help, e.g. cutting and stacking wood, construction work, farm work.



CURRICULUM OVERVIEW
for the NEW HAMPSHIRE-ECUADOR SEMESTER 2010


(1 credit equals a minimum of 80 hours of instruction)

ENGLISH, 1 credit
Objectives: Read classic American literature, explore poetry from a variety of authors, write daily journal entries and create a “Semester” book.
Methods: Writing, reading, journaling, discussions and public speaking. Research a relevant semester topic and present findings orally and in writing.

NATURAL HISTORY, 1 credit
Objectives: Study Permaculture, topics of Environmental Science, Meteorology, Geology; Biology of the Highlands and Jungle region in EC.
Methods: Daily observations and reflections, lectures, reading of and reflecting on scientific writings.

SOCIAL STUDIES, 1 credit
Objectives: Introduce local geography, history and political views of New England and Ecuador; draw comparisons between the two regions.
Methods: Live in a small, diverse community of students and teachers for several months, share attitudes and feelings in oneself on a daily basis with the group, listen to stories of elders, explore social values in the two different societies and their effects by living and interacting with them.

FOREIGN LANGUAGE – SPANISH, 1 credit
Objective: Communicate in Spanish with Ecuadorians.
Methods: Practice verbal and written communication skills throughout the semester in class as well as in interactions with local people in Ecuador.

CRAFTS, 1 credit
Objective: Create some of one’s own gear and equipment; learn sewing, knitting, felting and the use of knife and axe.
Method: Create crafts such as knife, felted vest or hat, drum, leather journal, backpack, spoon and bowl.

FINE AND PERFORMING ARTS, 1 credit
Objectives: Create a beautiful “Semester Book”, sing in rounds and in harmonies, develop theatrical presentations performed for the public.  
Methods: Instruction in the elements of Visual Arts, singing folk and traditional songs as well as theater.
           
PHYSICAL EDUCATION, 2 credits
Objectives: Deliver a fitness program; teach basic adventure sports, trek and attempt to climb several volcanoes in Ecuador.
Methods: Outdoor living skills, running, stretching, biking, swimming, rock climbing, paddling, trekking and mountaineering.

LIFE EDUCATION, 2 credits
Objectives: Live a simple and healthy lifestyle throughout the semester.
Methods: Study Health and Wellness, learn about local and seasonal foods in New England and Ecuador and prepare meals, create clothing participate in traditional building projects (e.g. wood- or garden shed), give individuals responsibility for one of the major parts of the community tasks.

COMMUNITY SERVICE, 1 credit
Objectives: Serve different communities the semester is connected with.
Methods: Help people in the neighborhood and while traveling in Ecuador, cutting and stacking wood, construction work, farm work, etc.
