A Personal Story of Local Sustainability

Chris & Ashirah Knapp bring to their teaching a wealth of first-hand experience in wilderness travel, homesteading, craft work and sustainable living. They have taught at Kroka Expeditions for seven years and are core teachers on the Vermont Semester Program. After high school, Chris attended Foson Folk School in Norway which sparked an intense interest in indigenous skills. Upon returning home to Maine, Chris studied for five years at Earthways School of Wilderness Living under Master Maine Guide and teacher Ray Reitze.

Ashirah began accompanying her father in his outdoor education work at the age of twelve. She holds a lifelong love of teaching. At the age of seventeen Ashirah moved from Cleveland, Ohio, to Maine, where she studied intensively under Ray Reitze for seven years. Ashirah is focusing her energy on the beginning of a family and raising children.

Ashirah and Chris met and married at Earthways. For the past 9 years they have lived in small, efficient, handmade homes. They grow and wild gather the majority of their food, and craft many of their necessities such as pack-baskets, snowshoes, winter clothing, and moccasins. Chris and Ashirah are both registered Maine Guides and Chris is currently pursuing a combined degree in history and sustainability at the University of Maine in Farmington. Ashirah and Chris feel blessed to live close to the land in a life that combines ancient skills with select modern technologies.

“Through conscious choice the best of the old skills and the best of modern-day life can be brought together to create an amazing future.
