Our number of semester alumni is growing steadily and
we are now at 48, with 12 more students from the NHVSP
’09 joining the ranks on June 7th. Gratefully, we
hear from many of our alumni regularly and some of them
have joined, or are joining, the Kroka staff. Misha and
I continue to patiently wait until some will be ready
to take over teaching our semester programs. Who could
be better teachers than those young people passing on
what they have learned from their masters.
For me one of the most exciting alumni news is seeing
the beginning steps of an Alumni Association. On January
2nd 2009 a group of alumni (I believe as many as 16) came
to Kroka for a New Year’s celebration. They had
a wonderful time singing, playing and dancing while sharing
stories of their adventures. The next day they met in
the Yurt and a few of them stepped forward to organize
an association: Saul Blocher VSP ’04, Hans Mayer
VSP ‘06, Ari VESP ’07 and Leah Erlbaum, Scott
Georgaklis NHESP ’08, Marcianna NHESP ’08,
and Celeste Tulecke Beyer VSP ’08. They had their
first official meeting in Montpelier on March 1st; the
first “newsletter is on the way.
The other exciting news is that a group of alumni organized
their own expedition in March. Tom Rosenberg VSP ‘06
led the Kroka alumni ski expedition to the sub-arctic
Groulx Mountains in Northern Quebec, while this newsletter
was prepared for the press. Tom, in his third year teaching
at Kroka, is a student at Marlboro College, where he also
works for their Outdoor Program.
A growing number of Kroka alumni are joining Kroka as
staff and apprentices. This season we welcome back Lily
Frey VSP ‘06, Hans Mayer VSP ‘06 and Tom Rosenberg
VSP ’06 and ‘08 as staff. Welcome to Clara
Kazarov, apprentice 2007/08 and Laurel Iselin, school
and summer alumna, as Kroka teaching staff. Raina Gardner
NHESP ‘08, and Ethan Tapper NHVSP ’09 will
be joining our summer apprentice crew.
Stefan Hofer VSP ’04 and ‘06 took a break
from his log building apprenticeship in the mountains
of Northern Norway to teach knife-making class to Kroka
semester students. Saul Blocher VSP ‘04, and currently
a student at Johnson State College volunteered his time
to assist Stefan. Thank you, Hannah Morgan VSP ’06
and ’08, who assisted with Tom Rosenberg in the
Vermont Semester ’08. Hannah is in her Junior year
at Sterling College.
