    Updates and News
    Volume 11
    5/1/2009

    Update from the River

I sit on the banks of the Nulhegan
    Looking at the Connecticut
    Writing an update
    - THINKING

The first days of travel in canoes
    Have gone by so fast
    Much has happened
    - AWESOME

    Kroka Expeditions
Ari carrying the “wanagan” to the put in

The first day we set out on the Clyde
    Paddled for six kilometers
    Beautiful land
    - HOME
The second day was a wet day indeed
    Water up to our armpits
    Rough rapids
    - ADVENTURE

Three boats came to Island Pond and stopped
    Where was “Min Kjaere”?
    Got lost
    - OR AHEAD?

    Kroka Expeditions
    Crossing Island Pond

Fours hours later we found her at last
With bodies huddling in sleeping bags
    Across the pond
    - HUNGRY

Then our first real portage began
    Carrying boats and gear
    On train tracks
    - WARM

Arriving at Nulhegan Pond we made camp
In the dark and the rain
    Ate dinner
    - SLEEP

The third day took us down the Nulhegan
    Summer temperatures
    Silent water
    - GENTLE

    Kroka Expeditions
    Gentle waters

We encountered much wildlife that day
    Paddling the “LaPine” with Miron
    Beaver, turtle, otter
    - BEAUTY

The birds have come back singing their songs
    Rapids came, portaging
    Train tracks
    - WEIGHT

People got tired and we set up early camp
    In a pine forest with
    Delicious dinner
    - FULL BELLIES

The fourth day the portage continued
Finally the river – we paddled
    Stopped by a bridge
    - DECISION

We had to decide if we should portage
    or line the boats
    Down rapids
    - CHALLENGE

    Kroka Expeditions
Lining on the Nulhegan through the rapids

We began to line the boats
    It went very slow
    Canoes flipped
    - HARD

    Kroka Expeditions
    Dylan portaging the “Mad River”

Once more we switched to portaging
on the train tracks for a while
    Stopped for lunch
    - REST

Suddenly we heard a train, was it approaching?
    We sat in the tracks
    And jumped
    - FEAR

Luckily the train turned out to be a truck
    No more portaging
    On the tracks
    - DETOUR

Off the tracks a walk on the road
Cars stopped and gave us rides
    We smiled
    - GRATITUDE

    Kroka Expeditions
Baruch, how much more can you carry?

Once in Bloomfield, VT by the Connecticut River
We set up camp and got Pizza
    At the General Store
    - JOY

We are now living life on the river
    Everyone is excited
    Loves it
    - LIFE!
