After a month of carving,
pounding, reading,
sanding, weaving, writing,
and chopping, we pick up
a new tool. It’s smooth,
strong, and individually
crafted—the paddle. We
step into a shining cedar
canoe with paddles in
hand. The ancient travel
routes open to us and
suddenly, we are free.
We study hydro power and water quality.
We learn geology from the top of Mt Ascutney.
We make fire with friction.
We fill our bellies with fiddleheads, knotweed pie, and other tasty
gifts from the riverbank.
“Kroka has not only taught
me white water paddling skills, bush life skills, and how to live
in the world around us, it has also shown me the spiritual side
of the world. Now I see what is around me in a new light.”

We use the wind to propel us towards home.
