Life at Kroka Farm Base Camp
Marlow, NH, January
We come together as a large family at Kroka’s base camp and learn
a multitude of new skills. We learn new ways of study and begin to
document our learning through prose, poetry, drawing and craft. Each
day starts with morning chores ranging from taking care of the farm
animals, wood splitting and shoveling snow, to cooking on a wood stove
and monitoring solar power. Morning chores are followed by silent
observation of the world from everyone’s secret spot. After breakfast
we begin our study with a main lesson. January subjects are directly
connected with the expedition preparation and range from meteorology
and wilderness medicine to nutrition and equipment construction. Each
day we practice skiing. We learn classical and skate skiing, and take
to the slopes of a nearby ski mountain for backcountry downhill lessons.
Afternoons are devoted to studying and creating projects. In addition,
each student will focus on an independent project in an area of the
expedition, such as food manager, gear and equipment manager or master
navigator. While students progress on their projects, expedition plans
materialize into reality. Each day ends with a study hall, songs,
music and community time.
| “ . . . We are in a state of perpetual preparation
and boundless excitement. Every day we learn something new and
get better at things we learned previously.”
– Emily Turner, Semester Student, Bristol, VT |

We learn about nutrition, appropriate foods
for the trail and the importance of a local diet. |

We make our own knives.
They will be our most important tool throughout the journey. |
| “A sense of place is a way of embracing
humanity among all of its neighbors. It is an entry into the larger
world.” – Robert Michael Pyle |
